We are California's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Fresno raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Fresno pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Fresno Raccoon Control Tip: Protecting Your Chickens From Being Attacked And Eaten By Raccoons
A great part of being a smallholder and having your own patch of land at home is being able to produce your own food, and keeping chickens is a great way to have your own supply of fresh eggs. If you're a farmer however and have more land, you may have a larger number of chickens to provide eggs for the wider community too, and it is important to be able to protect those chickens. One of the threats to your chickens is raccoons, as they are opportunistic feeders, and if they see an easy opportunity they may kill and consume one or more of your chickens.
How Likely Are Raccoons To Raid Your Henhouse?
Raccoons have quite a broad diet, and while some of their diet is from birds, they also eat other small animals, insects and fruit and vegetable matter too, so chickens don't usually make up a large part of their diet. However, when the opportunity arises and they see an unprotected chicken or henhouse, then they may try to look inside to see whether there is the opportunity to steal some easy meat.
Keeping The Coop Secure From Raccoons
The henhouse or coop is where the chickens will usually roost at night, and is often where the chickens will be when the raccoons are active, as raccoons are generally nocturnal animals. You should always make sure that any holes used to access the coop by the chickens are closed as soon as they are asleep to prevent other animals from being able to get in that way. It is also important to maintain the coop well, make sure that the walls and roof are sturdy and in good condition, as raccoons can take advantage of weak spots in this type of building.

Another area where chickens can be vulnerable to raccoons is in their outdoor space, although raccoons are not usually so active during the day when the chickens are let out. With any chicken run, make sure that the boundaries are well fenced, with the fence embedded around six inches into the soil where possible. Ideally, having chicken wire over the top of the chicken run will also stop raccoons from being able to climb easily in to the area in order to be able to attack the chickens.
Other Measures To Keep Raccoons Away
There are other general steps that you can take that will help to keep raccoons away from the area entirely, and one of these measures is to make sure your yard or fields do have sturdy fences around the perimeter. The most effective options for keeping raccoons out will be a sturdy fence, embedded six inches into the ground to stop them from digging underneath, and with electric wire or razor wire on top to stop them from climbing over. You can also take action to deal with other food sources that may be attracting raccoons into the area, such as removing fallen fruit promptly, to stop the scent from spreading, and ensuring any garbage is stored in a shed or garage.
Trapping And Removing Problem Raccoons
In some cases, the raccoon may still prove to be a problem despite your best efforts to keep the animal away and to keep your chickens safe. In this case, you should lay a cage trap in the area where the raccoons are active, and place a small amount of canned pet food in the trap as bait. Once you have caught the problem raccoon, you can either relocate the animal in a rural area well away from your property, or have the raccoon euthanized.
